MotoDiscovery celebrates Dia de los Muertos

The tradition is deep. It existed 3,000 years ago in Mesoamerica, an annual celebratory reunion with the departed. It would blend with European observance of All Souls Day with the 16th century arrival of Spanish Conquistadors and Christianity. The result is something unique on a global scale. Nowhere will you find this more authentic, than in the Central Mexico region of Oaxaca (wha-ha-ka).  MotoDiscovery invites you to join

Ruta 40 South America Expedition

A mega riding adventure riding the length of Argentina’s legendary Ruta 40

We categorize this South America motorcycle tour as ADVENTURE, and while not highly technical the route does have sections that are not paved and calls on participants to have at least some off-road riding experience and the appropriate physicality. A dual purpose “adventure” style motorcycle is required. In this case, you will be riding your own motorcycle (rentals also available) with MotoDiscovery managing the logistics of ocean freighting your personal motorcycle to and from South America. Shipping is included in the tour price. The route runs from near the Bolivian border, riding south along the legendary Ruta 40, the full length of Argentina, with excursions into neighboring Chile, all the way to Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia at the southern tip of the continent. Note that advance reservations are essential, and space is limited to 12 motorcycles. All reservations must be received with deposits by no later than six months prior to the tour date. Make plans today.

  • Riding your own motorcycle. The preparations even bring great enjoyment. The familiarity of riding your own bike on this South America motorcycle tour adds to the pleasure and there is value that exceeds renting.
  • La Mano de Desierto. You have dreamed of being photographed in the shadow of this iconic image of a towering hand rising out of the remote Atacama Desert…we’ll make it happen!
  • San Pedro de Atacama. Crossing from Chile into Argentina to stage for the ride down Ruta 40, we’ll experience an arid beauty that is reminiscent of the most scenic you will find in Utah, Arizona and the deserts of Wadi Rum of Jordan.
  • The Reserve of Los Flamencos. If lucky we’ll witness the incredible fauna of this 300 square mile reserve of lagoons and salt flats inhabited by colorful flamencos and other wildlife.
  • The Ruta 40. It stretches for more than 3,100 miles from the top of Argentina all the way to the southern tip of the continent on the shores of the Straits of Magellan. It follows the ancient Inca Trail and passages of the native Tehuelche people. To keep it interesting, we’re going to occasionally get off “la Cuarenta” to catch some remarkable riding along the way.
  • The Patagonia. It is as barren and remote as any place on the planet, windswept and sparsely populated by the most hardy of inhabitants, you will marvel at the isolation and the sheer beauty.
  • The Andes. Ruta 40 runs parallel with the Andes Mountains its entire length. You are never far from stunning views of this compelling region that often hosts the well known Dakar off road race.
  • The wine region of Mendoza. Vineyards abound in the foothills of the Andes, manicured landscapes producing some of the finest wines on the planet.
  • Torres del Paine. This remote southern Patagonia mountain range offers breathtaking panoramas of three towering snow capped and glacier sliced peaks in a National Park. It begs to be explored on foot, horseback, via canoe and of course, motorcycle.
  • The Estancias. A tradition that one must experience. We’ll stay on actual working ranches, home to the gaucho. No doubt the ritual of “asado” grilled meats will be part of the dinner plans.
  • The Perito Moreno Glacier. Nothing can compare to this 20 mile long, nearly 100 square mile mass of ice, one of few in the world that continues to grow. The power and energy of exploding ice crashing into the lake is something you will long remember.
  • The cuisine. Carnivores will be delighted. Here, beef is king. Vegans and vegetarians of course will be easily accommodated, but the “bife” of an asado may tempt you!
  • Tierra del Fuego. Land of Fire. This is the end of the earth, Ushuaia being the most southern populated place on the planet. Here our journey ends with a return to Punta Arenas, Chile to put the motorcycles in container for return shipment to the USA.
  • The service. We do it best. We’ve been doing it longer than anyone. You will find our staff team to be more than just great leaders. They are fun, responsible and there to make sure you have the best possible experience. That is our commitment.

Is this a good tour for a passenger?

Yes. We’ve hosted many ladies and passengers on South America adventure tours with exceptionally positive reactions. Would you like references? Contact us.

What if my passenger can’t do the whole tour?

It is not too uncommon for passengers to be tight on time. Partial tours may be available permitting your partner to join us for some of the highlights. Inquire with MotoDiscovery to discuss your options.

How difficult is the riding?

It is not technical. Unpaved sections may have occasionally brief stretches of deep gravel. There may be cross winds in Patagonia. Any experienced motorcycle touring enthusiast with at least some off road riding background should manage this tour just fine

What percentage is unpaved?

25% is scheduled to be unpaved with optional off road opportunities to expand this slightly.

How long are the riding days?

We prefer to take our time. The pace is moderate. Riding days average roughly 250 miles (some less, some more) with multiple two day stops. Opportunities do exist on many stages to extend your time in the saddle with optional excursions.  You will appreciate the MotoDiscovery approach to travel.

What is the best motorcycle for this tour?

This bike is “big bike” friendly however midsize  (400-900 cc) adventure machines are really more than adequate. In the end it is the one that you are most comfortable and competent with.

Considerable information will be provided to inform you of bike preparations and expectations.

How do I prepare my bike?

We’ll provide a comprehensive list of preparations. Tires will be addressed. It is important for the entire team to have their motorcycles well prepared.

What if I just want to rent a motorcycle?

We can do that . We will have an expedition prepared motorcycle put in the container from the USA. All you will have to do is fly in and out. Inquire with MotoDiscovery for details.

I am uncertain of my rider skills?

Don’t feel alone. While this is not a technical off road tour, you could do well with getting some rider training. Consider improving your skills by joining MotoDiscovery on one of our Adventure Rider Immersion Training Tours. And as a bonus, sign up to do our training tour and receive a certificate valued at $500 for use on the Ruta 40 Adventure

What about the shipping of the motorcycle?

This is something we have done for decades. You simply get your bike to Houston, Texas and we take over from there. It is an involved process with considerable paperwork and red tape, but we have the best in resources and years of experience. You will enjoy the foreplay of getting your own bike ready for this remarkable journey!

When do I have to have my motorcycle in Houston for shipping?

We ask that you have your bike in Houston at our secure warehouse shipping facility by no later than Dec 18th. So you see the importance of early reservations! We will request considerable documentation so that our office can prepare the necessary paperwork.

How are the accommodations?

No camping! MotoDiscovery is not a budget tour operator. Our preference is to stay in upper scale accommodations although we feel this adventure ride does not require the level of luxury offered on many of our tours. And there could be limitations in certain regions. Still, our riders universally complement us on the quality of our lodging. You won’t be disappointed.

How big will the group be?

We can only ship to South America what the container size will permit.  The first twelve motorcycles will be the lucky ones. Group size limited to 12 bikes. Better sign up fast.

What if you get less than 12 motorcycles to sign up?

It happens. We will then implement Tiered Pricing which, for a slight premium charge, we can run the tour as scheduled, maintain the high quality of standards and inclusions and enjoy the benefits that come with an even smaller group size.

Is language a difficulty?

Not when you have staff who are multilingual. We are there for you.

How is the weather?

This is run during what we consider the optimum riding season. You are crossing latitudes of varying climate zones so there is some degree of unpredictability, however we feel it will be most pleasant.

Will I carry my own luggage?

Yes, however the support vehicle will accommodate space for one duffel bag per rider.  You will be provided one (1) expedition duffle bag in which you can place items to be carried in the support vehicle in order to conveniently lessen your load. The balance of your belongings you will carry on your bike.

Is it safe?

Of course there are the usual advisories for travelers however in Chile and Argentina there are no security issues worthy of mention. You will be impressed with the warmth of the people in this part of South America.

I’d like to visit Antarctica while I’m in the region. Can you help me?

Yes.It requires an early commitment and at least four days extra at the end of your tour. Contact MotoDiscovery for details.

When should I sign up?

PLEASE…do it now! The group size is limited to 12 motorcycles. Extensive pre-planning is involved. Should the tour size fall below the 12 minimum, we will run the tour with fewer riders using a Tiered Pricing concept. The more we have the better the value!  Invite your friends! Start planning today.
